Papers collected relating to Sydney Wheeler Jephcott, poet and dendrologist, and his tree plantation at Ournie in the Upper Murray district. Includes poems written by Jephcott and translated by Manning as well as correspondence, articles and newscuttings, 1896-1971 collected by Manning through his interest in Jephcott. Drafts of the work entitled "The Portuguese navigators" by Henry Manning. Included are photocopies of published articles on Portuguese navigators, in particular Vasco da Gama and notes by Manning on similar topics. Filed by Manning according to various subjects.

Poet and farmer, Jephcott was self-educated and, from from the age of 12, lived alone in the mountains in a tent. After meeting Henry Kendall in the late 1870s, he began writing poetry. A friend of Francis Adams, who saw Jephcott's The secrets of the south: Australian poems (London, 1892) through the press in London. Jephcott completed an unpublished, critical selection of Adam's poems. Jephcott remained a cattle farmer and served as a shire councillor on the Towong and Tumbarumba Shire Councils...
